How to See Deleted Messages on Instagram: 4 Ways 2026

Want to know how to see deleted messages on Instagram? Here is the honest answer first: Instagram has no trash folder for DMs, and its own Help Center states that deleted messages cannot be restored. What you can still do depends on how the message disappeared. If you deleted the chat, the other person still has the full conversation, and an export from Accounts Center sometimes still contains it. If someone unsent a message, it is gone for both sides, and the only trace left may be a phone notification. Any app that promises more is selling you something that does not exist.

This guide walks through the four methods that genuinely work in 2026, what changed when Instagram dropped encrypted chats in May, where "Recently deleted" fits in (spoiler: not for DMs), and, if you sell through your inbox, how to make sure a deleted thread never costs you a booked call again.

Can you see deleted messages on Instagram?

Sometimes, but rarely the way people hope. The first thing to figure out is which kind of deletion happened, because each one leaves a different trail:

  • You deleted a chat (swiped it away or tapped Delete). It disappears from your inbox only. The other person keeps every message on their side, and the history may still show up in your data export.
  • You deleted a single message for you. Same logic: it is removed from your view, while the other person still sees it.
  • Someone unsent a message. Unsend removes that message for everyone in the chat. There is no copy left in the app on either side.
  • The other account was deleted, deactivated, or disabled. The thread usually stays in your inbox under the name "Instagram User", but the messages can later switch to "Unavailable message".

Once you know which of these you are dealing with, you know which method to try, and which ones are a waste of time. If you are new to how the inbox itself is organized, our explainer on what Instagram Direct is covers the Primary, General, and Requests tabs.

First, check the chat is really deleted

Before you start any recovery process, rule out the boring explanations. A large share of "deleted" Instagram DMs were never deleted at all. They were moved, filtered, or hidden by a glitch.

  1. Search the username. Open your messages and use the search bar at the top. A chat that slid far down the list is easy to mistake for a deleted one.
  2. Check Requests and hidden requests. If the conversation restarted from an account you do not follow, it may be sitting in Requests, or in the hidden requests folder that never sends a notification. Our guide to seeing message requests on Instagram shows exactly where both live.
  3. Check your Restricted list. Messages from a restricted account go to Requests and do not show read receipts, which makes the thread feel like it vanished.
  4. Log in on the web. Open instagram.com on a computer. If the chat appears there but not in the app, it is a sync problem, not a deletion. Updating or reinstalling the app usually fixes it.
  5. Check vanish mode. Messages sent in vanish mode disappear when you leave the chat, by design. If the thread had the dark vanish screen, nothing was deleted by anyone, it simply expired. See how vanish mode works on Instagram for the details.

If none of those bring the chat back, it was genuinely removed. Move on to the methods below, in this order.

Method 1: Ask the other person (the most reliable way)

The most reliable way to recover deleted Instagram messages is also the least technical one: ask the person you were talking to. Deleting a chat or a message "for you" only removes it from your side. The other person still sees the full conversation, including photos, videos, voice notes, and links.

You can ask them to:

  • Screenshot the part you need. Fast and good enough for most situations, such as an address, a price you quoted, or a date you agreed on.
  • Forward specific messages back to you. Instagram lets people forward a message into a new chat, which also works for shared posts and reels.
  • Copy and paste long text. Better than screenshots when you need to reuse the wording.

There is one catch. If the message was unsent rather than deleted, it is gone on their side too, so this method only works for deletions you made yourself. And if you are worried about how the request comes across, remember that a normal screenshot of a DM does not alert anyone: we cover exactly when Instagram sends alerts in our guide on whether Instagram notifies screenshots of DMs.

Method 2: Export your information from Accounts Center

The only official tool for recovering Instagram messages is Meta's data export, now called Export your information inside Accounts Center (older versions of the app still say Download your information). It packages the account data Instagram still holds, including your message history, into a file you can download.

Set your expectations before you start. Instagram's Help Center is explicit that deleted messages cannot be restored, so the export is a long shot for chats you deleted. It is still worth trying when the deletion was recent, because the export reflects whatever is still stored at the moment you request it. It will not contain unsent messages.

How to export your Instagram messages on iPhone or Android

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu (three lines) at the top right, then open Settings and activity.
  3. Tap Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
  4. Tap Export your information, then Create export.
  5. Choose your Instagram profile, then Export to device.
  6. Tap to customize the information and select Messages only. A messages-only export is ready much faster than a full one.
  7. Set the date range to All time, or to the period when the chat happened.
  8. Choose HTML if you want to read it in a browser, or JSON if you plan to load it into a tool. Then tap Start export.

Instagram notifies you when the file is ready. Small exports can arrive within minutes, larger ones can take much longer. Download it from Available downloads in the same menu within about four days, because the link expires after that and you would have to start over.

How to export your Instagram messages on desktop

The process is nearly identical on a computer, and reading the file is easier on a big screen:

  1. Log in at instagram.com and click More, then Settings.
  2. Click Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
  3. Click Export your information and Create export.
  4. Select your profile, Export to device, then customize the information to Messages.
  5. Pick the date range and format, and start the export.
  6. When it is ready, download the ZIP file and unzip it.

How to read the export file

Inside the ZIP you will find a messages folder with one subfolder per conversation, usually named after the other person's username. In HTML format, open the file inside that folder in any browser and you will see the thread as a simple page. In JSON format, open it in a text editor and search for a word you remember from the conversation.

If the chat you deleted is not there, it is not hidden somewhere else in the file. It means Instagram no longer had it when you requested the export. Do not request a second export hoping for a different result. Go back to Method 1.

Method 3: Read unsent messages in Android notification history

This is the only legitimate way to see a message someone unsent on Instagram, and it only works on Android. When a DM arrives, your phone shows a notification with a preview of the text. Android can keep a log of those notifications, even after the original message is unsent.

To turn it on:

  1. Open your phone's Settings.
  2. Go to Notifications, then Notification history (on Samsung phones it sits under Notifications, then Advanced settings).
  3. Switch Use notification history on.

From that point, the text of every Instagram notification is saved in that log, and you can scroll back through it whenever you want.

The limits are strict. Notification history only records notifications received after you switched it on, so it cannot help with a message that arrived yesterday if the feature was off. It only shows the preview text, not photos, videos, or voice notes. And it only works if Instagram notifications were allowed and the preview included the message text. On iPhone, there is no built-in equivalent: once you dismiss or clear a notification, there is nothing to scroll back to.

Method 4: Check your connected inbox or CRM (business accounts)

If you run a professional account, this is the method most people forget. Many businesses connect their Instagram account to a third-party tool: a DM automation platform, a shared team inbox, or an Instagram CRM. Those tools receive each message through Meta's official API the moment it arrives, and they store their own copy of the conversation.

That copy lives outside the Instagram app. If you or a team member deletes a chat in the app, the record in your tool is not touched, because deleting a chat is a local action on your side of the inbox. Open the lead's profile in your tool and the conversation history is usually all there, with the tags and notes you added.

Unsent messages are the exception again. Meta's API tells connected tools when a user deletes a message they sent, and how each tool handles that signal varies. Treat anything a lead unsent as withdrawn, and do not rely on resurfacing it.

Instagram's built-in Business chat features live inside the same inbox as every other DM, so a chat deleted there is gone from your account too. For a lasting record, you want a tool that keeps conversation history on its own servers.

Where is "Recently deleted" on Instagram, and does it show DMs?

"Recently deleted" is real, but it does not include messages. You find it in the app under your profile, then the menu, then Your activity, then Recently deleted. It holds photos, videos, reels, and stories you removed, so you can restore or permanently delete them. Posts and reels stay there for up to 30 days. Instagram's Help Center adds one line that settles the question: deleted messages on Instagram cannot be restored.

So when people search for "recently deleted messages on Instagram", they are usually looking for a folder that does not exist. If a DM is gone, Recently deleted is not where it went. This is also why recovery tutorials that start with "open Recently deleted" quietly switch to talking about posts halfway through.

What changed in 2026: encrypted Instagram chats are gone

Meta ended end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram after May 8, 2026. Encrypted chats had been an optional, opt-in feature since late 2023, available only in some regions and switched on chat by chat. Meta's explanation, quoted by PCMag, was that very few people were opting in, and that anyone who wants end-to-end encryption can use WhatsApp instead.

Two practical consequences for deleted messages:

  • There is no separate encrypted backup to chase anymore. Encrypted chats used a secure storage feature protected by a PIN, with their own download option. Before the cutoff, Meta showed people with affected chats how to download what they wanted to keep. If you skipped that step, those old encrypted threads may not come back.
  • All Instagram DMs now use standard encryption. That changes nothing about recovery for you: a chat you deleted is still not restorable from the app. It mainly means Meta can access message content on its servers, which matters for privacy, not for getting your messages back.

Why third-party recovery apps do not work

Search for how to recover deleted Instagram messages and you will see spyware brands, "data recovery" programs, and forum threads that end with a download link. The promise is always the same: recover any deleted or unsent DM, no matter how long ago. Here is why that promise is false.

  • They cannot reach Meta's servers. Your DMs live on Instagram's servers, not in a folder on your phone that a recovery program can scan. No third party has a back door into that data. If Instagram cannot restore a deleted message for you, an outside app cannot either.
  • Many are monitoring software. The tools that do capture messages work by being installed on a phone in advance and recording everything it displays. That only helps if they were running before the message arrived, and installing them on someone else's phone is illegal in many places.
  • They ask for your login. Any service that wants your Instagram username and password to "scan" your account is putting your account at risk, and it can trigger security checks or a lock.
  • They bill for an empty result. The common pattern is a free scan that "finds" messages, then a paywall to see them, then nothing useful after payment.

The rule is simple: the only real sources of a deleted message are the other person, Meta's own export, your phone's notification log, or a business tool you had already connected. Everything else is marketing.

How long do you have to recover a deleted Instagram message?

Act fast, but do not expect a guaranteed window. Meta does not publish how long a deleted chat stays retrievable through the export, so the honest rule is: the sooner you request your data, the better your odds.

What Instagram does document is the timeline for deleted accounts. Its account deletion page explains that a profile is permanently deleted 30 days after the request, and that the full deletion process can take up to 90 days. That matters if the other person deleted their account: their messages usually stay readable in your inbox for a while under "Instagram User", then may switch to "Unavailable message" with no warning. If that thread matters, screenshot or export it today.

Messages vs other deleted Instagram content

People often mix up recovering DMs with recovering everything else they lost on Instagram. This quick map shows where each type of content can come back from:

Why a deleted DM thread costs coaches booked calls

For a personal chat, losing a conversation is annoying. For a coach or creator who sells through Instagram, a deleted thread can be a lost client. The DM is where a lead told you their goal, their budget, their timeline, and the objection they had about price. When that thread disappears, you lose the context you need for the sales call, and sometimes you lose the lead entirely because you cannot remember who asked about what.

It happens more often than people admit:

  • Inbox cleanup sprees. You mass-delete old chats to get the inbox under control and take a few warm leads with them.
  • Team members. A virtual assistant or setter tidies the inbox and removes a thread they thought was finished.
  • Lost context after a gap. A lead goes quiet for three weeks, comes back, and the conversation is buried or gone, so you restart from zero.
  • Accounts that vanish. A prospect deactivates their account for a detox, and the thread turns into "Instagram User" right before you were due to follow up.

None of these can be fixed with a recovery trick after the fact. They can only be prevented by keeping lead conversations somewhere more durable than the Instagram app.

How to never lose a lead conversation again

The fix is to stop treating the Instagram inbox as your system of record. Here is a simple setup that works for a solo coach and scales to a team:

  1. Log every lead conversation outside the app. Connect your account to a tool that stores conversation history, such as a CRM built for coaches or an Instagram DM platform. Deleting a chat in the app then never deletes the lead.
  2. Move chats, do not delete them. Instagram has no archive for DMs, so if your goal is a clean inbox, move finished chats from Primary to General instead of deleting them. Deletion should be rare and deliberate.
  3. Write down the key facts after each qualifying chat. Goal, budget, timeline, and booked call date belong in a note or CRM field, not only in a DM thread.
  4. Export your messages on a schedule. A quarterly messages-only export from Accounts Center gives you a dated backup you control.
  5. Reply fast and move to a booked call. The faster a qualified lead lands on your calendar, the less a DM thread matters. The call becomes the next step, and your notes carry the context.

This is where Instagram DM automation earns its keep beyond saving time. A system that answers each new DM, asks your qualifying questions, and pushes the lead to your calendar also leaves a clean, searchable record of every exchange. If you want ready-made wording for those first messages, our Instagram DM scripts follow the same DM-to-call flow.

SetSmart works exactly at that layer. It is an AI setter that replies to your Instagram and WhatsApp DMs in seconds, qualifies each lead with your questions, and books the sales call on your calendar. It does not close the sale in the chat: you or your closer do that on the call. Every conversation stays in your SetSmart dashboard, and you can export any conversation, with its full message history, to CSV, so tidying your Instagram inbox no longer erases a lead's history. As Mathis Ladoué, an online fitness coach with 22.4K followers, puts it: "I book 15 to 25 calls per week... without managing a single setter."

FAQ

Can you recover deleted Instagram messages?

Not from inside the app. Instagram has no trash folder for DMs, and its Help Center states that deleted messages cannot be restored. Your real options are asking the other person, who still has the chat if you only deleted your side, requesting a messages export from Accounts Center, or checking a business tool that already logged the conversation.

Where is recently deleted messages on Instagram?

There is no such folder. Recently deleted, under Your activity, only holds photos, videos, reels, and stories you removed, with posts and reels kept for up to 30 days. Direct messages never go there, so a deleted DM will not appear in Recently deleted no matter how soon you check.

Can you see deleted messages on Instagram if the other person deleted them?

If they deleted the chat on their side, yes: deleting only removes it from their inbox, so your copy is untouched. If they unsent a message, no: unsend removes it for everyone. The only possible trace is your Android notification history, and only if it was switched on before the message arrived.

Do deleted messages show up in the Instagram data download?

Sometimes, if the deletion was very recent and Instagram still held the data when you requested the export. Often they do not. Unsent messages never appear. Request a messages-only export as soon as you notice the loss, and download it within about four days before the link expires.

Can you see messages from a deleted Instagram account?

Usually for a while. The thread stays in your inbox with the sender shown as "Instagram User", and older messages often remain readable. Instagram can later replace them with "Unavailable message", and it does not document when. If the conversation matters, screenshot it or run an export right away.

Do apps that recover deleted Instagram messages work?

No. Outside apps cannot access Meta's servers, so they cannot restore anything Instagram itself cannot. Many are monitoring software, some ask for your password, and most charge for results they never deliver. Stick to the other person, the Accounts Center export, or Android notification history.
