WhatsApp Click to Chat: How wa.me Links Work (2026)

WhatsApp click to chat is WhatsApp's official way to let someone start a chat with you without saving your number first. You share a link in the format https://wa.me/<number>, and anyone who taps it lands in a WhatsApp conversation with you, optionally with an opening message already typed in the box. It works on phones and on WhatsApp Web, it is free, and it does not need any app or tool to build.

For a coach, a creator, or an agency that sells through conversations, the click to chat link is the front door to your WhatsApp inbox. It turns an Instagram bio, a story, a Google listing, a webinar slide or a printed flyer into a one-tap shortcut into a DM where you can qualify the lead and book a sales call. This guide explains exactly what happens when someone taps the link, every link format (including the business short links most guides skip), how to build one by hand, where to place it, how to track it, and how to make sure each tap becomes a booked call instead of an unanswered chat.

What is WhatsApp click to chat?

Click to chat is a WhatsApp feature that opens a chat with a phone number from a link. WhatsApp's own How to use click to chat help page describes it as a way to "begin a chat with someone without having their phone number saved in your phone's address book," as long as the number has an active WhatsApp account.

The link lives on wa.me, a short domain Meta runs for WhatsApp, in the same way ig.me is Instagram's and m.me is Messenger's. If you already use Instagram DM links, our guide to the ig.me link covers the Instagram twin of this exact mechanic.

Three properties make click to chat useful for business:

  • No contact saving. The visitor does not need to add you to their phone book. That alone removes the step where most people give up.
  • Prefilled first message. You can put words in the visitor's mouth, such as "Hi, I want the free plan," so they only have to press send.
  • It works everywhere a link works. Bios, ads, emails, websites, PDFs, QR codes, Google Maps listings. Anywhere you can paste a URL becomes a WhatsApp entry point.

What click to chat does not do is send anything on the visitor's behalf. The chat opens with your text in the input box, and nothing is delivered until the person taps send. That detail matters for consent and for how you write the prefilled line, which we cover below.

How click to chat works behind the tap

When someone taps a wa.me link, a short chain of redirects runs before the chat appears. We tested it in October 2026: a request to https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hi%20GO returns a redirect to api.whatsapp.com/send/ with the number, the message and two extra parameters (type=phone_number and app_absent=0). From there, the device decides what happens next.

Where the visitor taps What they see
Phone with WhatsApp installed WhatsApp opens straight on a chat with your number, prefilled text in the box
Desktop browser A WhatsApp page reading "Chat on WhatsApp with" your number, with buttons to open the app or continue to WhatsApp Web
Device without WhatsApp The same page, with a prompt to download the app or use WhatsApp Web
Number not on WhatsApp WhatsApp cannot open a chat, so the visitor hits a dead end

Two practical consequences follow. First, desktop traffic always sees an extra screen, so a link in an email newsletter read on a laptop converts a little worse than the same link in an Instagram story read on a phone. Second, the link is only as good as the number behind it. If the number is not registered on WhatsApp, or you typed it wrong, every tap fails silently from your side. You will never see those lost leads.

There are five link shapes in the wild. Knowing which is which saves you from broken links and lets you pick the right one for each placement.

Format What it does Use it for
wa.me/15551234567 Opens an empty chat with that number Contact pages, email signatures, Google Business Profile
wa.me/15551234567?text=... Opens the chat with your message prefilled Bio links, story stickers, lead magnets, "message me GO" campaigns
wa.me/?text=... No number: shows the visitor's contact list so they can forward the text "Share with a friend" referral buttons, not lead capture
api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=...&text=... The long form that wa.me redirects to, still working Legacy site buttons and old templates; prefer wa.me for new links
wa.me/message/CODE Business short link: hides the number, message editable later Printed QR codes, ads you cannot edit, anything long-lived

The prefilled version is the workhorse for coaches. A link that opens with "Hi, I want the 12-week plan" turns a vague "I might message later" into a single tap. It also tells you where the lead came from and what they want before you even reply, which makes the first answer far sharper.

The number-less wa.me/?text= format is easy to confuse with the others. It does not open a chat with you. It opens the visitor's own contact picker so they can send your text to someone else. Use it for referral prompts ("send this to a friend who wants to lose 5 kg"), never for your main call to action.

You do not need a generator to build a click to chat link. It is a URL you assemble by hand in under a minute.

  1. Write your number in full international format. Start with the country code, then the number, with no plus sign, no leading zeros, no spaces, no brackets and no dashes. WhatsApp's help page is explicit: use https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX, not https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX. A UK mobile like 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123, and a French mobile like 06 12 34 56 78 becomes 33612345678.
  2. Build the base link. Add the number after https://wa.me/. That is a working click to chat link already.
  3. Add your prefilled text. Append ?text= followed by your message, URL-encoded. WhatsApp's own example is https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX?text=I'm%20interested%20in%20your%20car%20for%20sale.
  4. Test it twice. Open it from a phone that is not logged into your business number, then from a desktop browser. Confirm the chat opens with your business, the text is correct, and nothing is cut off.
  5. Shorten or wrap it if you need tracking. The raw link is fine to publish. If you want click counts, route it through a short link on your own domain (more on tracking below).

If you would rather not encode anything by hand, our free WhatsApp link generator builds the link and a matching QR code from a number and a message.

URL-encoding the prefilled message

The text= value must be URL-encoded, or the message breaks at the first special character. These are the characters that trip people up most often:

Character Write it as Why it matters
Space%20Unencoded spaces break the link in many apps
Line break%0ALets you prefill a two-line message
&%26A raw & starts a new URL parameter and cuts your text
?%3FSafer encoded inside the message
#%23A raw # is treated as a page anchor and everything after it is dropped
Comma%2CUsually survives, but encoding avoids surprises in ad tools

The quickest way to encode a message is to type it into any URL encoder, or into a browser console with encodeURIComponent("your text"), and paste the result after ?text=.

Writing a prefilled message that gets sent

The prefilled line is a nudge, not a guarantee. The visitor can edit or delete it before sending. The lines that get sent most are short, first person, and specific:

  • Keyword style: "GO", "PLAN", "CALL". Fast to send and easy for an automation to detect.
  • Intent style: "Hi, I want to know if the 12-week program fits me." Gives you context for a better first reply.
  • Source tag style: "Hi, I saw your webinar W1." The bracketed code tells you which placement drove the chat.

Avoid anything that sounds like the visitor already committed to buy ("I want to pay for coaching"). People delete those lines and type their own, or close the chat entirely.

If you run the free WhatsApp Business app, you already have a click to chat link you may not know about. WhatsApp's How to create short links page explains that a short link "is automatically generated when you create an account on the WhatsApp Business app." You find it under Tools > Short link.

From that screen you can copy or share the link, and switch on a default message that customers can edit and send when they open it. The big advantage over a hand-built wa.me link: you can change that default message later without changing the link itself. When the short link is opened in a browser instead of the app, WhatsApp shows a page with your business information and a "Continue to chat" button.

The same screen gives you a QR code. According to WhatsApp's About QR code for WhatsApp Business page, your QR code "won't expire unless you reset it or delete your WhatsApp Business account," and if you have a business username, it is displayed on the code. Resetting the code kills the old one, so never reset a QR code that is already printed on flyers or slides.

If your number runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API used by automation tools), you get a more powerful version. Meta's developer documentation for QR codes and short links lists the rules:

  • Short links look like https://wa.me/message/ followed by a random code.
  • One business phone number can hold up to 2,000 QR codes and short links.
  • The prefilled message can be up to 140 characters and can be edited or deleted at any time.
  • The random code masks your phone number, unlike a plain wa.me link.
  • Meta keeps no analytics for these links or scans, by design, to protect user privacy.

You create them in WhatsApp Manager under the Message links tab, or through the API. For a coach, the practical win is one link per placement (bio, webinar, lead magnet, podcast) with its own prefilled message, all pointing at the same number.

A click to chat link earns its keep anywhere you cannot show a native WhatsApp button. For a coach or creator, these are the placements that tend to produce real conversations:

  • Instagram bio. Your bio link is prime real estate. Point it at a prefilled wa.me link, or at a link page with a "Message me on WhatsApp" button. Our Instagram link in bio guide covers the trade-offs of a single link versus a hub. If your WhatsApp Business account is linked to Instagram, a WhatsApp button can also appear on your profile.
  • Story link stickers. A story that says "tap to get the meal plan on WhatsApp" with a prefilled link converts attention while it is hot.
  • Google Business Profile. WhatsApp's Google Business Profile help page shows the path: Edit profile, then Contact, open the Chat section, choose WhatsApp and add your click to chat URL. It then appears as a chat button in Google Search and Maps results. Useful for in-person trainers, studios and local coaches.
  • Website and landing pages. Use WhatsApp's official "Chat on WhatsApp" button, which comes in green and white and three sizes, and is currently available in English only, according to the click to chat help page. Do not restyle it; the brand guidelines ask you to use it as is.
  • Email signature and newsletters. One line, "Questions? Message me on WhatsApp," with a link. Expect the desktop extra screen here.
  • Lead magnets, webinars and podcasts. Put a QR code on the last slide or the last page of the PDF, with a prefilled line that names the asset.
  • Printed material. Business cards, gym posters, event badges. Use a business short link here, since you cannot edit print later. Our free WhatsApp QR code generator creates a printable code from any link.

These two get mixed up constantly. A click to chat link is an organic URL you place yourself. A Click-to-WhatsApp ad is a paid Meta ad whose button opens WhatsApp. The visitor's experience is almost identical, but the plumbing differs: ad-started chats carry ad context and get a special free entry point window on the Business Platform, while a plain link tap opens a normal customer service window. If you pay for traffic, use the ad objective built for it. If the traffic is organic, a link is all you need. How replies are billed depends on your setup and on Meta's current rate card, which changes often; our WhatsApp Business API pricing breakdown keeps track of it.

WhatsApp does not show you who tapped your link or how often. Plain wa.me links carry no stats, and Meta's platform documentation states that analytics are not available for QR codes and short links. UTM parameters do not survive into WhatsApp either. You have three practical options:

  1. Wrap the link in your own redirect. Publish yourdomain.com/whatsapp (or a branded short link) that redirects to the wa.me URL. Your analytics or link tool counts the visits before the redirect.
  2. Tag the prefilled message per placement. Give each placement its own line or code ("Hi, I saw the webinar W1", "Hi, from the podcast P2"). You will see the source in every chat that gets sent, which is the number that actually matters.
  3. Use one platform short link per placement. With up to 2,000 short links per number, you can keep one per channel and match chats to their prefilled message.

The second option is the most honest metric, because it counts conversations, not clicks. A thousand taps that never send a message are worth nothing. Fifty chats that say "W1" tell you the webinar works.

A genuine wa.me link is safe. The domain belongs to Meta, and the link can only do one thing: open a chat with a number, with optional text in the box. It cannot install anything, read your messages or send a message without you tapping send.

The risk is the person on the other end. Scammers spread wa.me links in job offers, investment "opportunities" and fake support messages, because a chat feels more personal than an email. The rule is simple: if you did not expect the contact, do not trust it just because it arrives through an official WhatsApp link.

For your business, there are two privacy points to weigh:

  • A plain wa.me link exposes your number to anyone who reads the URL. If that is your personal phone, you will get messages at all hours. A business short link hides the number, and a dedicated business number keeps your personal line out of it entirely.
  • A public link invites spam. Anyone can message you. That is the point, but it also means you need a way to sort real leads from noise without reading every chat yourself.

Common click to chat mistakes (and how to fix them)

Most broken click to chat links come from the same handful of errors:

  • Plus sign, zeros or spaces in the number. wa.me/+44 07700 900123 fails. Use wa.me/447700900123.
  • Unencoded message text. A raw & or # silently truncates the prefilled message. Encode the text.
  • Testing from the same number. If you open your own link on the phone that holds the business number, WhatsApp opens a chat with yourself. Test from a different phone.
  • Linking to a number that is not on WhatsApp. A landline or a fresh SIM that was never registered breaks every tap.
  • Resetting a printed QR code. The old code stops working the moment you reset it.
  • Using the share format by mistake. wa.me/?text= without a number opens a contact picker, not a chat with you.
  • Pointing the link at a number nobody watches. The most expensive mistake of all, and the subject of the next section.

What happens after the tap decides the sale

Here is the trap. You publish a click to chat link, chats start to arrive, someone sends "Hi, I want the 12-week plan" at 10:40 pm… and they wait until the next afternoon for an answer. By then the motivation has faded, or they have messaged a competitor who answered first. The link did its job. The follow-through did not.

WhatsApp is worth the effort because the leads who do engage on it are unusually warm. In our analysis of 828K Instagram and WhatsApp DM conversations, WhatsApp leads who replied qualified at 34%, roughly 1.9x the Instagram rate. The catch is that this only happens when somebody answers quickly and keeps the conversation going, and our lead response time statistics show how quickly interest cools when they do not.

That is the job of an AI setter connected to your WhatsApp number. With SetSmart, the chat that opens from your click to chat link gets an instant reply that picks up the prefilled message ("you came from the webinar, nice, what's your goal?"), asks your qualifying questions, follows up when the lead goes quiet, and books the sales call in your calendar. You connect either a dedicated business number (the recommended setup) or your existing WhatsApp Business app number in coexistence mode, so you can keep using the app on your phone. Booking confirmations, cancellations and no-show messages can go out as WhatsApp templates.

The AI does not try to sell your program inside WhatsApp. High-ticket coaching closes on a call, with you or your closer. The goal of the chat is to fill your calendar with qualified sales calls, and the click to chat link is simply the front door. For the wider setup, our guides to WhatsApp automation and the WhatsApp chatbot show how the rest of the funnel fits together.

FAQ

Write your number in full international format with no plus sign, zeros, spaces or dashes, and put it after https://wa.me/. For example, https://wa.me/15551234567. To prefill the first message, add ?text= followed by your URL-encoded message, such as ?text=Hi%20I%20want%20the%20plan. Test it from a second phone before publishing.

Is WhatsApp click to chat free?

Yes. Creating and sharing a wa.me link costs nothing, and so does the short link in the WhatsApp Business app. If your number runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the link is still free, but the messages you send in the conversation may be billed by Meta depending on the message type and your setup.

Can I message someone on WhatsApp without saving their number?

Yes, that is exactly what click to chat is for. Open https://wa.me/ followed by their number in international format in any browser, and WhatsApp opens a chat with them without adding them to your contacts. The number must have an active WhatsApp account.

How do I get a WhatsApp click to chat URL for Google Business Profile?

Build your link as https://wa.me/ plus your WhatsApp Business number in international format. Then in your Google Business Profile, go to Edit profile, then Contact, open the Chat section, select WhatsApp, paste the URL and save. Customers then see a chat button in Google Search and Maps.

Does a WhatsApp Business QR code expire?

No. WhatsApp says your Business app QR code will not expire unless you reset it or delete your WhatsApp Business account. Resetting creates a new code and disables the old one, so do not reset a code you have already printed. Platform QR codes stay active until you delete them.

Not from WhatsApp. Plain wa.me links and Meta's QR codes and short links come with no click analytics. To measure, wrap the link in a redirect on your own domain, or give each placement its own prefilled message so you can see the source in every chat that arrives.
